4 Tips for Fall Kayaking

by | Oct 24, 2021 | Kayaking

Fall marks the start of colder weather, and if you’re someone who wants to go on a kayaking adventure in this season, there are certain things to keep in mind. Kayaking in fall is better than winter as water is cold but not freezing, and so, winter kayaking should be avoided.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for kayaking this fall:

Eat Protein

Whenever you’re out kayaking in cold weather, you should eat enough protein so your strength can last longer. That extra protein will help you stand the cold, and ensure your body is strong and warm for a longer time. For some instant energy, pack some granola bars with you, or take a nut mix to munch on while you’re kayaking on the water.

Bring Something Warm to Drink

It can get really cold out on the water, so be sure to take a warm drink with you in an insulated thermal container. This way, you can warm yourself up instantly with a cup of tea or coffee and function better while enjoying the weather.

Always Keep Moving

Although this sounds obvious, some kayakers make the mistake of not moving enough when they become cold.

To prevent your body and muscles from getting too cold, try to move as much as you can. An unmoving body doesn’t generate enough body heat, and so exercising while inside your kayak can do wonders. This also ensures your legs or arms won’t get numb, which can be a painful experience.

Take Breaks

When kayaking on the cold water, you’ll tire out easily. Make sure you take enough breaks so that your body can move around and become warm. On a break, have something warm to eat or drink or stop at a warm place and light a small fire to heat your bodies up. This can also provide a great opportunity to move around a bit, change into dry clothing, and re-energize.
